The long anticipated Christie's auction of two diamond bracelets, containing 112 old cut diamonds, that belonged to Marie Antoinette, Queen of France by far exceeded expectations, doubling estimates with a winning telephone bid of more than US$8m. On the eve of the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette wrapped up her jewelry, including the two bracelets and sent them off to Brussels, Belgium, with instructions to keep them safe. The bracelets were returned to Marie Antoinette's only surviving child, Marie-Thérèse Charlotte; "Madame Royale", in Austria a few years later and remained in the family for over 200 years.
