  • In an article published by Interfax Alrosa’s Vice President Yuri Okoyemov stated seasonal factors had affected demand for rough diamonds in March, which were slightly down compared to January-February.  "But the results of the trading session in March are good; Q1 on the whole can be given a positive assessment," he said. "Generally the forecast for the year is good at the moment; we are expecting stable demand and prices, with seasonal variations."

  • Canadian miner Mountain Province Diamonds said that 2018 has seen a strong start in rough diamond markets. "The first two sales of the year substantially exceeded expectations, and prices have firmed across all product categories since the second half of 2017," said Interim President and CEO David Whittle. The company reported a net income of CAD$17.2 million for the full year which ended December 31, 2017.
     

  • Quebec-based Stornoway Diamonds full-year results reflect “a lower diamond price environment than was originally forecast by the Corporation". The company reported a net loss of CAD $114.6 million (US$ 89.1 M) from net income of CAD $19.6 million (US$ 15.2 M) in 2016 in its financial year ended December 31, 2017. The results reflect "a lower diamond price environment than was originally forecast by the Corporation". Before the impairment net income was $11.1 million for the fourth quarter and $15.0 million for the year.

  • Australia's Lucapa Diamond Co., with assets in Angola, Lesotho, Australia and Botswana, has announced in its Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2017 that diamond sales fell 38% to $31.6 million last year compared with $51 million a year earlier, though the 2016 figures are skewed by the $16 million sale of Angola's largest ever rough diamond, the 404-carat 4th February Stone.

  • Tiffany & Co. reported that its global net sales for FY 2017 (ended January 31, 2018) increased 4% to $4.2 billion, reflecting sales growth in most regions - particularly in the U.S. and China. However, its comparable store sales remained flat for the year despite 9% sales growth in the fourth quarter (Q4). During Q4, on a constant-exchange-rate basis, worldwide net sales rose 6% and comparable store sales were 1% above the prior year, falling short of estimates of a 2.7% gain.

  • Russia's ALROSA, the world's largest diamond producer, saw its profits tumble by 41% in FY 2017 owing to a variety of factors, including: a 13% ruble appreciation against the US dollar, a 9% decrease in the average price of gem-quality diamonds sold and fallout from the tragic Mir mine flood. The financial downturn took place against the background of increases in the volume of diamonds sold as well as production.

  • Signet Jewelers same store sales declined 5.2% in the fourth quarter and declined 5.3% in full year fiscal ended February 3, 2018, the company announces at the conclusion of a self-described "challenging year". At the same time they announced two additions to its Board of Directors, appointing Sharon L. McCollam and Nancy A. Reardon as Independent Directors effective March 13, 2018.

  • Gem Diamonds returned to profit in 2017 as it recovered seven diamonds over 100 carats, but the miner's prospects are looking even better for the year ahead, as today's announcement of the recovery of a 169 carat stone is the seventh diamond of over 100 carats recovered already in 2018. Gem returned to profitability for the year ending 31 December, recording a profit before tax of $30.3m, up from a loss the previous year of $124.1m; profit after tax was $17.2m (-$144.1m) and attributable profit was $5.5m (-$158.8), after exceptional items.

  • Sarine Technologies Ltd, one of the leading diamond industry technology developers, announced significant declines in its financial figures in 2017, with total profits falling 68% to US$5.76 million and revenues down by 19% to US$58.6 million.

  • The De Beers Group today announced its annual results for 2017, showing high volumes of production and sales offset by a lower value mix of goods, leading to a 4% reduction in total revenue to $5.8 billion from $6.1 billion 2016.

  • Petra Diamonds Ltd said Monday its earnings as well as revenue fell slightly in its first half as core earnings fell 8 percent, despite a rise in production, as the miner was hit by industrial action in the form of a Q1 strike in South Africa, the inability to sell the blocked Williamson parcel (71,654 carats still being held by the Tanzanian government) and the strengthening ZA Rand against the USD, which the company says had a combined impact of approximately US$18 million. 

  • Leading Chinese jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook reported a 5% year-on-year increase in same store sales (SSS) for the three-month period ended December 31, 2017 (Q3 FY2018) in its key markets of Mainland China and Hong Kong & Macau, reflecting solidification of the recovery in demand and increasing points of sale. Overall retail sales value in Hong Kong and Macau was flat year-on-year for the third quarter, but recorded 12% growth in Mainland China.

  • Tiffany & Co. saw its worldwide net sales increase 3% to $976 million in the third quarter for the three months ended October 31, 2017, while comparable store sales declined 1%. On a constant-exchange-rate basis, their comps held steady. Their net earnings increased 5% to $100 million from $95 million. The uptick in net sales was driven by a 15% rise in the Asia-Pacific region, to $283 million, as strong growth in mainland China contrasted with declines in most other countries, which the jeweler attributed largely to lower Chinese tourist spending.

  • Signet Jewelers announced its results for the 13 weeks ended October 28, 2017 (Q3 Fiscal 2018): total sales were $1,156.9 million, down $29.3 million or 2.5%, compared to a decrease also of 2.5% in the 13 weeks ended October 29, 2016. The retailer's same-store sales ("SSS") were down 5.0%, including an estimated 120 basis point negative impact that they attributed to weather-related incidents (read, hurricanes) and systems and process disruptions associated with outsourcing the credit portfolio.

  • BlueRock Diamonds plc, which owns and operates the Kareevlei Diamond Mine in the Kimberley region of South Africa, achieved record monthly sales in October 2017 of US$226,400 (ZAR 3.25 million), also achieving a record monthly number of carats sold at auction of 609.84. The October parcel was sold at an average of US$371.25 per carat, compared with the average price realised for the first 9 months of 2017 of US$336.65 per carat. The diamonds produced and included in October’s sales tender resulted in a grade of 2.64 cpht.

  • Two leading Hong Kong-based jewelry retailers, Chow Tai Fook and Luk Fook, delivered strong results in the second quarter of their respective financial years ending September 30 2017, signalling the sustained recovery of the Greater China market after a prolonged slump. Chow Tai Fook reported a 15% increase in retail sales in Mainland China and a 12% rise in Hong Kong and Macau compared to the same period a year ago. Luk Fook, reporting only same-store sales (SSS), reported 17% growth year on year, including a 16% increase in gem-set jewelry.

  • Petra Diamonds Ltd., the London-based diamond miner with five mining operations in South Africa and Tanzania, has reported that Q1 FY 2018 (for the period from July 1 to Oct. 20 2017, covering production and sales from July 1 to Sept. 30 2017) production was down 4% to 1,053,817 carats (Q1 FY 2017: 1,097,523 carats) mainly due to a planned reduction in tailings production at Finsch and Kimberley Ekapa Mining Joint Venture (“KEM JV”).

  • Petra Diamonds Ltd., the London-based diamond miner with mining operations in South Africa and Tanzania, reported its FY 2017 revenue up 11% to $477.0 million (FY 2016: $430.9 million), though its adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell to $157.2 million from $164.3 million in the year before due to delayed ramp-up of the expansion programs and higher cash costs. The miner's net profit after was down 69% to $20.7 million (FY 2016: $66.8 million).

  • Dominion Diamond Corporation reported their financial and operational results for the second quarter fiscal 2018 which ended on July 31, 2017. The results were in line with expectations, consolidated carats produced increased 72% to 2.6 million carats in the second quarter from 1.5 million carats for the same period a year earlier due to higher tonnes processed and a focus on high-grade Misery Main ore at the Ekati mine, with steady performance at the Diavik Diamond Mine.

  • Russian diamond mining giant ALROSA announced that its revenue in H1 2017 fell by 17% in current value terms to $2.66 billion (RUB 155.6B), while net profit tumbled by 46% to $840M (RUB 48.9B).

  • An increase in wholesale sales of diamonds, strong growth in e-commerce sales and new store openings help Tiffany & Co. beat earnings estimates despite the fact that same-store sales declined for the seventh straight quarter. For the second quarter (ended July 31, 2017), the renowned luxury retailer reported a 9% rise in net income to $115 million, up from $105.7 million during the same period a year earlier, on net sales of $960 million. Analysts had expected the company to earn revenue of $930.3 million.

  • Signet's total sales for the Second Quarter of fiscal 2018 were $1.4 billion, up $26.2 million or 1.9%, compared to a decrease of 2.6% in the 13 weeks ended July 30, 2016 (Q2 2017). However, the jeweler’s first-half sales fell 5% to $2.8 billion, with profit sliding 25% to $171.9 million. The company also announced that it has agreed to acquire R2Net for $328 million in an all cash transaction.

  • Gem Diamonds, which owns 70% of the Letšeng mine in Lesotho - famous for the production of large, high quality, exceptional white diamonds - and 100% of the Ghaghoo mine in Botswana, reported a 14% drop in revenue for H1 2017, to $92.9m from $109.1m a year earlier. The poor results from Letšeng were reportedly due to a 12% fall in carat recovery (50,478), as well as a decline in average diamond prices, which fell to $1,779 from $1,899 y-o-y.

  • Mountain Province Diamonds - a 49% participant with De Beers Canada in the Gahcho Kué diamond mine located in Canada’s Northwest Territories - reports strong interest in Antwerp for Gahcho Kué Diamonds in Q2 2017 (ended June 30, 2017), despite a challenging rough diamond market. For the three months of Q2, MPD reported a net income of US$6 million (C$7.6 million) or US$0.39 (C$0.05) per share.

  • Following publication of their Q2 Interim Results, shares in Pandora, the Danish maker of charm bracelets, slumped 8 percent "after the company missed analyst expectations for revenue and profits in the second quarter", writes Financial Times, adding that this makes it currently, "the worst performing stock in Europe." Despite revenue improving 12% to $767 million (DKr 4.83 billion) in the second quarter, it fell well shy of analysts’ expectations of $780 million (DKr4.91bn.

  • De Beers and parent company Anglo American (AA) today announced their interim financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2017, with the diamond giant reporting a mixed bag while the diversified miner saw its massive restructuring bear fruit. De Beers underlying financial result were positive, as Underlying EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) increased by 3% to $786 million (H1 2016: $766 million), capital expenditure (Capex) dropped significantly and its return on capital employed (ROCE) for the year increased from 7 to 11%.

  • Gem Diamonds has released its H1 trading update showing improvement in the discovery of highly valuable diamonds from Letšeng mine in Lesotho, as well as a strong uptick in sales prices for its large stones, but are investors convinced that real recovery is on the horizon? After a year of declining large diamond recoveries (5) and prices (-26%), the company has recovered five +100 carat diamonds since the end of March alone (4 in reporting period, 1 just after) and has seen its pricing increase to an average of US$1,779 per carat for the period, up 20% from US$1,480 per carat in H2 2016.

  • In its quarterly update on commissioning activities at its Liqhobong Diamond Mine (owned 75% by Firestone and 25% by the Government of Lesotho) for the quarter ended June 2017 (Q4), Firestone Diamonds says it completed its commissioning activities and reached full nameplate targets for all three months of the quarter. In Q4, Firestone treated 925,000 tons treated (Q3: 639,000 tons), bringing the total for the financial year to 1,966,000 tons, at the upper end of guidance range of 1,800,000 to 2,000,000 tons.

  • Chow Tai Fook continued its upward sales trend during Q1 2017 (three months ended June 30), as retail sales increased 17% in value in Mainland China and 7% in Hong Kong and Macau. After 12 consecutive quarters (3 years) of same store sales decline in Hong Kong and Macau, dating back to Q4 2014, the Hong Kong-based jeweler has now experienced growth for the second quarter in a row. Same-store sales growth in the two regions amounted to 11% and 5%, respectively.

  • In June 2017, Russia's ALROSA Group sold $365 million worth of rough and polished diamonds, with rough diamond sales reaching $354.4 million and polished diamond sales $10.6 million, the company announced in a press release. The company's rough sales showed a significant value decline from the $468 million in rough sold in May. The volume of rough sold was not stated, but the value decline is a result of the company reducing stocks of smaller and cheaper stones.

  • For the year ended 31 March 2017, South Africa-based and JSE-listed junior diamond mining company Trans Hex Group reported a loss of $14.1 million (R182.6 million), representing an 81% increase than the year prior, when the group recorded a loss of $7.8 million (R100.8 million). The loss derives from sales revenue decreased by 19.5% to $41.8 million (R540.2 million) compared to the corresponding period a year earlier. Diamond sales by volume fell 17.5% to 40,187 carats, while the average price of rough sold dropped 2.2%, the company reported.

  • As Petra Diamonds approaches the close of financial year 2017 (ending 30 June 2017), it has released a market update revising its production and revenue guidance down by 8-9%, despite the fact that the miner is on track to achieve record revenue and production figures in FY 2017. "However, due to the slower than anticipated build-up of its expansion programmes across its operations, production is now estimated to be ca. 8-9% lower than guidance of ca. 4.4 million carats. As a result, revenue is expected to be ca.

  • Candian miner Dominion Diamond Corp. reports an 18% surge in revenue in fiscal Q1 (three months ended April 30, 2017), which the company attributes to mining the high-grade Misery Main pipe at the Ekati mine, coupled with with stable production at the Diavik mine. Consolidated carats recovered increased 17% to 2.15 million from 1.83 million carats in Q1 fiscal 2017. Dominion sold fewer carats than in the same period last year - 2.3 million compared to 2.6 million - but the average price per carat increased to $90 from $69.

  • Hong-Kong based Chow Tai Fook jewelry Group, China's largest jeweler by market value, reports a 3.9% growth in net profit for the financial year which ended March 31, 2017, indicating a return to profit following a sales decline in Hong Kong and Macau, dating back to Q4 2014. The company told the media that although they had seen a stronger second half, a full-fledged recovery was still some time away.

  • South African junior miner Rockwell Diamonds yesterday published its fourth quarter and annual results for FY 2017, with rough diamond revenues declining by 31% to $26.1million for FY2017, compared to FY2016 ($37.7 million), due chiefly to a 33% decrease in carat sales (18,976 carats to 12,789 carats).

  • Russian diamond mining giant reported rough-diamond revenue its first quarter results for 2017. Group revenue is up 38% q-o-q but down 17% y-o-y to $1.5 billion (RUB 84.8 bn) for the three months that ended on March 31. Gem-quality rough sales fell by 18% to $1.35 billion (RUB 76.1 bn), with the remaining revenue coming from industrial grade diamonds, gas sales and other products.

  • Tiffany & Co. reported Wednesday that while U.S. sales varied by location in the first quarter, they were “generally soft” with both foreign tourists and local customers spending less. In the first quarter ended April 30, the New York-based retailer recorded a 4 percent decline in same-store sales in the Americas, with net sales down 3 percent to $392 million. Worldwide net sales rose 1% to $900 million due to growth in Asia-Pacific - Tiffany's second largest market - and an increase in the wholesale sale of diamonds, while comparable store sales were 3% below the prior year.

  • Graff Diamonds announced they had added to their collection of exceptional stones by acquiring the 373.72-carat rough diamond sourced from the Karowe mine in Botswana. The stone was once a part of the Lesedi la Rona, the second largest gem quality diamond to ever be discovered and the largest to be unearthed in the last century. According to Graff the fragment was separated from its famous sibling during the recovery process.

  • Mountain Province has announced its first quarter results (period ended March 31, 2017) from diamonds sold from the new Gahcho Kué mine, of which it owns 49% in a joint venture with De Beers. Mountain Province earned approximately US$37.7 million from three sales in Antwerp of approximately 522,000 carats - for an average price of $72 per carat.
