Covid-19 had a dramatic impact on trade shows and many companies tried replacing them by virtual meetings. Even though companies’ turnovers were unaffected because exhibitors saved money – booths, hotels, travel, etc. - by not participating, virtual meetings lack attendee engagement compared to the live events and face-to-face meetings still prove to be most successful in networking. Furthermore, companies have to be where competitors are, so when trade shows get back on track, companies that ignore them will fall behind.
2020 proved to be quite a challenge with regards to hosting in-person trade fairs, and although online alternatives accelerated the digital revolution within the industry, there is no doubt that in-person viewing and buying is still very much the norm.
HKTC announced today that due to continued restrictions on international travel, the organizers have decided to postpone the HK March shows, The HK International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show (1-5 March) and HK International Jewellery Show (3-7 March) are rescheduled to 2-6 July 2021, at AsiaWorld-Expo.
Following new outbreaks of the COVID-19 virus across the globe, the organizers of Watches & Wonders, Richemont backed Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) have decided to cancel the live event, scheduled for beginning of April 2021 and replace it with an all online event.
The Antwerp World Diamond Centre and Israeli Diamond Institute, in collaboration with VDB Expo, this morning kicked off a three day Online Diamond Trade Show, featuring 50 exhibitors from Israel and Antwerp. The event, which is open 24 hours a day and has direct communication features including live videochat, already has 800 registered professional buyers, from over 50 different countries. In the pre-covid era, traders would now be gearing up to ship goods and travel to the Hong Kong September show.
With the announcement of the cancellation of the November GemGenève Show, it seems like the last international offline trade show is now officially off the calendar. Today, Informa Markets issued a release that states "Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW) goes virtual for 2020", with the traditional trade fair resuming in September 2021.

According to market sources, INFORMA MARKETS (IM) will be announcing the postponement of the mother of all trade fairs, commonly known as Hong Kong September, to November shortly. However, many believe the postponement is just putting off the evil hour of a cancellation.
The organizer of the BaselWorld show, the MCH Group, has announced they are cancelling the 2021 edition of the show - slated for end of January beginning of February next year after negotiating an "amicable settlement" with some of the major brands who recently announced their departure from the show.
Reed Exhibitions has announced that it will not be organizing its JCK Las Vegas and Luxury shows this year altogether. The organizer is planning to set up "a virtual event" this summer and will partner with the Jewelers International Show, Oct. 13–16 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Five major watch brands, Rolex, Patek Phiippe, Tudor, Chanel and Chopard today announced they will be leaving BaselWorld. The exit follows a letter by Rolex topman Hubert du Plessix pleading for a refund for the brands set to participate in the canceled 2020 edition. In a joint statement, the brands announced they plan to start a new show, which remains unnamed, scheduled for April 2021, in conjunction with the organizers of Watches & Wonders (FHH).
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) earlier this week announced the new dates for the twin trade fairs in Hong Kong: 3-6 August 2020. The HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show 2020 and the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2020 were previously scheduled to run concurrently from 18 to 21 May, but were postponed following the goverment's announcement of a quarantine for all travellers arriving from outside China.
AWDC, IDI and VDBapp have announced they have extended the online diamond trade show, the first show to be held online with two additional days, through to Sunday April 5th.
Over 500 diamond and jewelry professionals have registered to visit an online diamond trade show, starting this Monday March 30, co-organized by The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) and Israeli Diamond Institute (IDI). The show, which runs to April 4, provides a virtual trading space where some 70 Belgian and Israeli diamond traders, 43 of which are based in Antwerp, exhibit their goods on the customized Virtual Diamond Boutique trade platform.
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) yesterday, 23 March 2020 announced the suspension of preparations for its upcoming trade shows following the goverment's announcement of a quarantine for all travellers arriving from outside China. It cannot host an international show under these conditions.
The 2020 edition of JCK Las Vegas, the leading jewelry event in North America, as well as sister show Luxury will be postponed until later in the year due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, according to a statement by the show organizers. Reed Exhibitions and the Reed Jewelry Group say they expect to announce a new date "shortly". JCK Las Vegas was scheduled to run June 2–5, with sister show Luxury starting on May 31 and running through June 5.

Last week, precautionary considerations due to the outbreak of the coronavirus led to the cancellation of two European fairs, Baselworld and Watches & Wonder Geneva (formerly SIHH).
Following yesterday's announcement of the cancellation of the Geneva 'Watches & Wonders', Baselworld has followed suit, postponing the luxury event until January 2021 on account of the coronavirus. The organization has published the following announcement:

The Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair last week (20-23 June) provided a snapshot of a cautious diamond industry in the midst of a period of weak sentiment and even weaker demand, according to several traders we spoke with this week. And they do not see any quick fixes on the horizon. While it may not be the largest diamond show of the year, Hong-Kong June is the most important mid-year jewelry sourcing event in Asia, and as such provides us the opportunity to take the pulse of the polished diamond trade. The consensus? Sentiment is poor.
‘Wait and see’
The third edition of CARAT+, a diamond-centred event in Antwerp scheduled for February 10-12 2019, has been postponed due to a lack of commitment to participate on the part of exhibitors and visitors, the organizers announced today. Due to the lack on confirmed participants with the event being less than four months away, the organizer "concluded that it would be difficult to achieve the high-quality standards we impose on ourselves while meeting the expectations of our visitors and exhibitors for an event like CARAT+."
This past Monday, the JCK Las Vegas show and jewelry week surrounding it came to its conclusion with steady trading reflecting a confident US market, despite a significant dip in the number of exhibitors and foot traffic at the various shows. The exhibitors and organizers acknowledged the decline of visitors, but were adamant that those attending the events headed out to the desert with a greater sense of purpose than in prior years, as buyers were looking for specific goods and exhibitors were maintaining existing relationships.
The longstanding Managing Director of Baselworld, Sylvie Ritter, has decided to step down from her position at the MCH Group, which runs Baselworld. Michel Loris-Melikoff, who has until now held the position of Director of MCH Beaulieu Lausanne SA, will succeed her. The Group says that Ritter decided to hand over the management of the World Watch and Jewellery Show: "After 26 years with the MCH Group – 15 of which were as Managing Director of Baselworld – it's time for me to start something new and take on new challenges", says Sylvie Ritter in explaining her decision.
Some 2,400 industry professionals attended the first day of the specialized diamond trade fair, CARAT+, opened ceremoniously by model and actress Elizabeth Hurley in Antwerp on Sunday, followed by a surprise parade of vintage cars crusing through the show. Is it appropriate for the diamond industry to offer mass quantities of loose one-carat diamonds at these events? What is the message we are sending to the high-end consumers who frequent trade fairs, if they see high-end diamond jewelry pieces at one booth, and then loose diamonds in large quantities offered at wholesale prices at another booth? Does this help us promote diamonds as a rare creation of earth or harm those efforts? Isn’t it clear that we are hurting our own business with these actions?
The Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) will be organizing an India Diamond Week from April 23-25 in Mumbai, the first ever such trade fair in India, writes industry organization GJEPC. About 200 booths for polished diamond companies will be set up within the bourse, and Indian as well as international traders will be invited to apply for them. “All booths will be standardised and be of the same size,” explained Mehul Shah, Vice President of BDB.

The VOD Dubai International Jewellery Show, as the event will be called, is to take place November 15-18 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The intention is to bring together entire the global jewelry industry chain - from international trade organizations and chambers of commerce, to wholesalers, manufacturers, traders, retailers and end consumers.
According to the Diamond Empowerment Fund their new millennial oriented campaign ‘Diamonds do Good’ had reached three million consumers within their target group. The strategy to spread the word on the campaign includes a revamped website, a targeted media plan which is shared on Hulu, Pandora and YouTube, and an online influencer strategy. DEF said the message of ‘Diamonds Do Good’ is resonating with consumers.
