On November 1st, the people of Botswana chose a new President for their country, President Duma Boko. Duma Boko is a part of the opposition coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and studied Law at Harvard University.
This election marks the end of a 58-year rule of the Botswana Democratic Party, the party of his predecessor Masisi.
As an important diamond-producing country, diamonds are on top of mind for the new president. Boko said he wanted to close a new sales pact with De Beers. Last year, De Beers agreed on a new diamond sales pact, which would increase the government’s share of diamonds from Debswana, equally owned by Botswana and De Beers, to 50% in the next 10 years.
