Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Monday was on hand at the ‘Hira Bourse SEZ’ in Surat for the inauguration of HK HUB, Hari Krishna Exports' new diamond manufacturing facility. HK Hub features three buildings that will focus on cutting larger diamonds,Addressing the inaugural function with an estimated at 20,000, Prime Minister Modi urged the diamond industry in Surat to take a lead in making the country as number one in the gems and jewelry sector, saying, “We have become number one in diamond cutting, but now is the time we should become number one in gems and jewellery as well." He added that, “As far as the gems and jewelry sector is concerned, our aim should not only be Make in India but also Design in India ... Enough of just diamond cutting and polishing. We need to make consumers across the globe interested in ‘designed in India’ jewellery,” Modi said. He assured the diamond industry that the Indian government would support them.
Futher, as The Times of India reported about Modi's visit, Modi told the Indian diamond industry that he would be going to Israel on their behalf. "I'm soon going to Israel, in fact I'm the first Prime Minister to go to Israel, and I'm going there on your behalf. You have trading relations with that country," said Modi, who was speaking after inaugurating a hospital in Surat on the same day. Modi's upcoming visit to Israel in July is billed as historic. He is expected to visit Israel on his way back to India from the G20 summit in Hamburg in the second week of July.
