Rio Tinto Diamonds reported a 10% rise in production on the year in the first quarter of 2016 to 4.52 million carats from 4.12 million carats. The miner's forecast for diamond output remains unchanged at 21 million carats, it reported. Last year's total production was 17.3 million carats.
At the Diavik mine in Canada's Northwest Territories, carats recovered were 26% higher in the first quarter of 2016 due to higher mining rates, availability of stockpiled ore and higher grades recovered. And at the Argyle mine in Australia production was 5% higher on last year in the first quarter due to increased underground volumes.
